Darnal E-Campus Charter School
Our local grade school has a proud record of excellence in education. Darnall Charter School is a self-governing, collaborative learning community that provides standards-based instruction guided by assessment data, while nurturing the unique qualities of our diverse students.
They are also a good neighborhood citizen. They open there doors for our community meetings every other month and have partnered with the council for fund raising, dumpster days and other events. A good school is an important part of a vibrant community and we are fortunate to have the Darnal E-Campus in the heart of Redwood Village. /http://darnallcharterschool.net/ The MLK Day of Service EventOver 70 volunteers showed up for a day of community service in Redwood village. Community Leader Wins an Emerald AwardAt the 2011 State of the District presentation on Thursday April 28, City Council Person Marti Emeral acknowledged the people of district 7 that are making a difference in the community. She referred to all community members that help to improve our area as "Team 7" and thanked us all for our individual efforts.
In every community there are individual leaders that stand out from the crowd by helping to organize and unite a community behind common goals. Marti recognized our community council president, Anna Orzel-Arnita, as one of those people. Anna was awarded the Emerald award for community leadership. Anna succeeds by establishing positive relationships and inspiring people to contribute their time, talent, money and or power to our efforts for the common good. We have all seen the amazing improvements to the community that have taken place during her term as president as the proof of her effectiveness. Congratulations Anna on this well deserved award! Public Art Installations
Redwood Village can boast to over half a dozen public art installations. This is quite extraordinary for a community of its size. Almost all of the public art was created by volunteers without the aid or funding of local government. We have murals, sculpture and even a community garden. Resident constructed public art shows that people have pride in their community and it helps to define the character of the community. As you walk our streets keep your eyes open for the art residents have created for your enjoyment. We think you will find it inspirational and uplifting. As Pablo Picasso said, "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
The New Roots GardenThe New Roots Garden is directly adjacent to Redwood Village on 54th street. Watch the video to find out more about this amazing place.

The Redwood Village Community Water-Wise GardenVisit our water-wise garden installed at the corner of 58th and Day Street. On November of 2007 residents, Mark Twain High School Students, and Teen Challenge members came together to remove trash, clear weeds, dig holes, and install landscaping. The garden features two Palo Verde trees, a California Fan Palm, and several native plants. The whole project was funded by a grant from The Ken Blanchard Companies so no community money was used. The garden is now established and maintained by volunteers and has become a point of pride for area residents.
The Redwood Village Community Council organized a make-over for the Water-Wise Garden on Saturday March 26. Community members were joined by Teen Challenge to help do the work. Robert Baltran donated an amazing amount of fabulous plants for the effort. This area was once a vacant lot used for illegal dumping. Now it is an beautiful drought tolerant garden spot. With over 200 square feet of garden space, a flower sculpture and doggie bag dispenser this mini-park is a point of community pride. Next time you are in the area stop by the park and see all the work that was done by our guerrilla gardeners. Erik Weber DayIn 2009 one of our extraordinary resident was recognized for his scholastic accomplishments and volunteer efforts by the City of San Diego. The City council passed a resolution making July 14th, 2009 "Erik Weber Day."
When Erik was 3 he was diagnosed as autistic. the doctors predicted he would never develop mentally past the level of an 18-month old. Now in his 20's Erik has well exceeded those expectations and become a rather outstanding young man. He is well spoken, well educated and has a fabulous character and spirit. Here is a list of some of his accomplishments:
